Southern University Baton Rouge, or SUBR for short, is a historically black college located in Baton Rouge, which is the 2nd largest city of Louisiana, located in East Baton Rouge Parish, having a population of more than 227 000 inhabitants, more of whom are living in its metropolitan area, known as Greater Baton Rouge, more exactly nearly 775 000. The Baton Rouge-Pierre Part Combined Statistical Area, which contains Greater Baton Rouge, has more than 797 000 people, living within its limits, fact which makes it the 64th largest urban area in USA.
SUBR was founded in 1880, by the Louisiana General Assembly, being originally located in New Orleans, LA. In 1912, the New Orleans campus was closed, move, which was authorized by Legislative Act 118, and the new campus, was opened in 1974, just north of Baton Rouge, in the area then called Scotlandville, LA. Today, SUBR is a comprehensive university that offers 42 bachelor’s, 20 master’s, 5 doctoral and 3 associate degree programs, to an enrolment of approximately 9000 students.
The Jaguars, by which name the athletic teams from SUBR are called, have managed to maintain the university’s continuing dominance as the unquestioned leader in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, having notable achievements in both men’s and women’s sports. During the 2004-2005 athletic year, SUBR won the ‘’Barbara Jacket/Sadie Magee Award’’ for tops among the women’s sports, also tying Jackson State for the `C.D. Henry Award`, for tops among men’s programs. For doing so, the university was awarded the Commissioner’s Cup, for the most outstanding athletic program in the conference, for the 4th consecutive year. Southern’s athletic program has received the distinction of the SWAC’s elite program 12 times, in the 15-year history of the Commissioner’s Cup.
The list of notable SUBR alumni contains resonant names such as Willie Davenport - two-time gold medalist of U.S. Olympic Track Team, Randy Jackson - musician, record producer, and American Idol judge, Melvin `Kip` Holden - first African-American mayor of Baton Rouge, LA, Sherian Grace Cadoria - first African-American female to reach the rank of General in U.S. Army, as well as several other people who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
